EU Regulations on Animal Research

All Animal Research in the European Union (EU) is regulated under Directive 2010/63/EU on the protection of animals used for scientific purposes consolidated with a recent text Directive  02010L0063-20190626.

In summary, the final aims of these 2 «Directives» are to replace all animal research with non-animal methods of research, such as organoids, invitro research, or computer simulations.

To perform research on animals, the Scientist must have a convincing scientific justification.
In the first Directive, European Union implemented the 3Rs principles of replacement, reduction, and refinement. Furthermore, the EU-wide ban on animal testing for cosmetic purposes has been complete since 2013.
